Suburban Lifestyle and Worldview in Cheever's ‘The Swimmer'

This essay focuses on the cultural classes and human heroes in Cheever's ‘The Swimmer' (1964) and seeks to demonstrate that the provincial lifestyle is a thematically essential feature of the short story. The following paragraphs will show the fact that relationships among the inhabitants with the suburbia affect the protagonist's understanding and knowing of time and business lead up to his final damage. The story starts off on a sunny Sunday evening when the protagonist and his wife Lucinda go to the Westerhazys. Both equally couples happen to be from the upper-class society. They sit by the pool, have got a drink and talk about the hangover from the last night. This kind of corresponds to their particular snobbish lifestyle. These people talk about the same feelings and talk about the same genteel topics. The incomprehensible lifestyle leads to comfort and laziness. No surprise that they usually meet identical characters because they are. In this way Ned's journey continues—peaceful and really unsuspecting. The second prevent he reaches is by the Grahams.
